In order from left to right: Archbishop Timothy P. Broglio, Bishop Jaime Soto, Pope Leo XIV
Dear friends,
This week, the U.S. bishops gathered in San Diego for their June assembly, and I want to share with you a powerful and timely message that emerged from these conversations. The U.S. Conference of Catholic Bishops (USCCB) continues to stand up for immigrant communities across the country, recognizing the fear and uncertainty many are experiencing.
Sister Mary Jude, director of the Office of Hispanic Apostolate for the Diocese of Norwich, CT, recently shared a reflection from Archbishop Timothy P. Broglio, President of the USCCB, that directly addresses the issue. His words are a clear and compassionate affirmation that the Church stands with those suffering as a result of increased immigration enforcement. Below is a summary of the Archbishop's message, which we encourage you to share with your communities:
"As your shepherds, your fear resonates in our hearts, and we share your pain. Count on our commitment to accompany you in this difficult time." — Archbishop Timothy P. Broglio
On June 16, 2025, Archbishop Broglio issued a public reflection on the growing anxiety among immigrant families due to the recent increase in immigration enforcement measures. He emphasized that while legal measures to protect community order and safety are necessary, they must be balanced with compassion, justice, and due process.
The Archbishop pointed out the troubling reality that many of these actions have extended beyond individuals with criminal records, reaching homes, workplaces, and places of worship. In doing so, these efforts risk tearing at the social fabric of communities and damaging the dignity of our neighbors.
Quoting Pope Francis and reflecting on Pope Leo XIV's recent message in Chicago, Archbishop Broglio reminded us that at the heart of the Christian faith is a call to communion: a life rooted in love, unity, and shared humanity. He warned that our nation's immigration system, marked by systemic deficiencies and growing hostility, falls far short of this ideal.
The reflection also denounced the unjust attacks against Catholic service providers who work tirelessly to support vulnerable populations. These accusations, Archbishop Broglio stated, only serve to deepen social divisions and sow fear where there should be understanding.
Despite these challenges, the Church remains steadfast in its mission. Archbishop Broglio affirmed the bishops' solidarity with all those affected and expressed his gratitude to the Catholic and community organizations that heal the wounds and assist those in need.
Also worth noting:
Bishop Jaime Soto, President of the Board of Directors of the Catholic Legal Immigration Network, Inc. (CLINIC) and Bishop of Sacramento, issued a statement regarding the increase in law enforcement actions. His full comments are available on the CLINIC website .
We encourage everyone to read these reflections in full and share them widely. Let us be voices of compassion and justice, and ensure that our immigrant brothers and sisters know they are not alone.
